It's a party on the plaza for My Waterloo Days

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The 28th annual My Waterloo Days celebration is already underway. This year the new RiverLoop Expo Plaza is the main attraction and will be hosting a variety of vendors, carnival rides, and area bands.

It has been a busy couple of days for organizers.  They quickly found out when preparing a new venue, not everything goes as planned.

"It's a brand new set-up and so there are always things you didn't anticipate that we have to make adjustments," Executive Director of My Waterloo Days, Jay Stoddard said.

Mark Becker has been setting up his concession stands at My Waterloo Days for more than a decade. He says the expo plaza has made many venders split up their stands to cover both the park and the new plaza.

"That's why you don't see hardly any trailers here. They're mainly tents, people have their bigger trailers and bigger operations down there at the plaza," Becker said.

Construction workers were able to get all the bricks and pavers in, but one thing they couldn't finish was all the landscaping. There are several spots around the plaza that are not complete.  They are missing sod and plants.

"It was just a race to get through before our set up began on Tuesday so we've been setting up the expo plaza area all yesterday until about 10 o'clock last night." Stoddard said.

"I'm excited about that plaza, I mean last night when we drove by I felt like we were going to Disney World or something. There is a lot of buzz and a lot of excitement," Becker said.

On Thursday night there are two bands scheduled to perform at People in the Park and at the plaza the carnival rides will stay open until 11:00.

The east and west side parking ramps in downtown Waterloo will be open to the public for parking Friday night. However, at 9:30 PM they will be closed for the fireworks. Once the fire works are over the ramps will re-open.
