DES MOINES (AP)--Iowa has reached a settlement in a federal lawsuit against the state over a mentally ill woman who blinded herself while she was in prison.
The state paid over $141,000 to Shayne Eggen and her lawyers last month. Eggen blinded herself in 2002 while she was at the state women's prison in Mitchellville.
Her family filed a federal lawsuit in 2004. They claimed that instead of giving Eggen proper treatment, prison authorities repeatedly locked her in solitary confinement for behaviors caused by schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.
Eggen finished her prison sentence in 2005 and was taken to a state mental hospital in Independence, where she remains.
