Kernels win 4th straight game

Posted:

May 25, 2009 - Adam Younger hit a bases loaded double in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Kernels a 6-5 come from behind win over the Lansing Lugnuts on Monday afternoon at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Kernels trailed 5-4 heading into the ninth but Matt Crawford and Robert Lopez drew walks. Angel Castillo reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt when Lansing tried to throw Crawford out at third, but the throw wasn't in time. That set the stage for Younger to smack a line drive double into the left center gap, scoring Crawford and Lopez with the winning runs.

Kernels reliever Vladimir Veras (2-1) picked up the win, striking out three over 1.2 scoreless innings. Kernels starter Manuel Flores allowed five runs on 13 hits over six innings in a no-decision effort. Lansing starter Chuck Huggins allowed just three hits and struck out nine over four innings and reliever Matt Daly (1-3) took the loss.

Jon Townsend was 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI in his first game back since coming of the DL yesterday. Dwayne Bailey and Tyson Auer both had two hits and an RBI. Tyler Pastornicky led Lansing, going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI.

The Kernels now hit the road for a ten game, 11-day road trip, starting Tuesday night in Fort Wayne at 6:00 pm. John Rodgers brings you the action on the radio home of Kernels baseball, 1450 KMRY AM. Fans may listen on-line at www.kmryradio.com or www.kernels.com.

The Kernels return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, June 6th to open a four game series with the Burlington Bees. Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com, or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560. Ticket office hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday and 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday.
