Asbestos found during Palo demolition

PALO (KWWL) -- The demolition of the Palo Community Center and City Hall are being put on hold after a significant amount of asbestos was found in the gymnasium.

Before the demolition project started, the city collected more than 34 samples for asbestos testing and completed two separate assessments of the building. Based on results from these tests, an outside company was hired to remove the asbestos.

Previous rennovations of the community center had hidden some of the asbestos, which was uncovered during the demolition.

According to city officials, asbestos material is considered safe is undisturbed, but the asbestos needed to be removed due to the flooding last June.

The city says the discovery of more asbestos supports the decision to demolish the building, saying public safety was a factor in their original decision.

The asbestos found is non-friable, meaning it will be easier to remove. The process should take about 3 days. Residents are asked to stay outside the orange barricade around the building.
