New Hartford set with new tornado siren

NEW HARTFORD (KWWL) As we enter another season of possible severe weather, the town of New Hartford has a new tornado siren.

During the tornado in New Hartford last May, the siren only went off for a short time because power went out.

Without a backup power source, some firefighters risked their own lives driving through town trying to warn people.

Since then, reisdents got together and raised nearly $14,000 for a new, battery operated siren.

"Right now we can set off the siren from trucks or the country can set off the siren and alert people. I have a granddaughter who feels safer now because we have a new siren and it's louder and closer to her house," said firefighter Gordy Ballhagen.

New Hartford firefighters are hoping to get some grant money to put another new siren on the outskirts of town, near where the tornado hit last year.
