Free bike helmets for students

NASHUA (KWWL) -- Nashua-Plainfield elementary school students received free bicycle helmets Tuesday.

The Nashua police department awarded 250 free helmets to every student kindergarten through fourth grade.  It's part of their "bike rodeo" which has taken place every year since 1975.

This effort has been deemed the "officer friendly safety patrol" -- promoting bicycle safety skills and responsibility to all elementary students.

"It's a great tool, putting 250 bike helmets out on these kids," Nashua Police Officer Paul Becthold said.  "Hopefully it becomes the cool thing to do and kind of a snowball effect and everybody will start wearing them."

This is the first year of the "bike rodeo" that the officers awarded free helmets.

The Nashua Police Department was able to exceed its fundraising goal for this campaign through local area businesses.
