Southeastern Ill. sheriff accused of drug dealing

SHAWNEETOWN, Ill. (AP) -- The long-time sheriff of Gallatin County is in legal trouble, accused by federal prosecutors of trafficking marijuana often while in uniform and in his county-owned vehicle.

Raymond Martin was arrested Monday on three counts of marijuana distribution and two counts of carrying a firearm while trafficking drugs.

Martin has been sheriff in the southeastern Illinois county since 1990.

The complaint accuses the 46-year-old of distributing more than two pounds (1,100 grams) of marijuana between April 27 and May 11. But investigators believe he dabbled in tens of pounds of marijuana, at times even telling a confidential informant how to grow pot.

A woman who answered Martin's home phone today refused to comment.

A detention hearing for Martin is scheduled for tomorrow.
