Commencement at University of Iowa

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Commencement ceremonies were held for several colleges at the University of Iowa Saturday, and with a rising unemployment rate, it may be hard for graduates to find work.

"I'm pretty sure, no one, even people who had jobs dont' have jobs right now," University of Iowa graduate Raven Hollenhorst said.

Iowa Workforce Development says Iowa's unemployment rate in March was 5.2 percent.  That's more than a percentage point higher than March 2008, when it was 3.9 percent.

More than two thousand graduates of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences earned their degrees Saturday in Carver Hawkeye Arena.  In spite of the challenges ahead, many parents say it's important to celebrate the moment.

David Thoms is not the least bit worried his son Jacob has yet to line up a job in the health sciences field.

"I just can't believe how proud I am today to sit here and watch my son walk down the aisle and get his degree and shake his hand, give him a big hug and tell him, I love him," David Thoms said.

Stella Herzig supports her daughter Liana's decision to move to Texas in hopes of finding a behind-the-scenes job in the film industry.

"We feel a little nervous about it, but we're very confident. She's a really responsible person with a good work ethic," Stella Herzig said.
