Wall partially collapses on Waterloo building

WATERLOO (KWWL) Part of a wall of Waterloo building dating back to 1918 collapsed Friday night.

"I got a phone call from the fire department saying there'd been a collapse, came down here immediately and it was a lot worse than what we thought," said Liz O'Malley

Liz O'malley and her husband bought the Waterloo Baptist Temple about six years ago.

The O'Malleys originally thought about making it a house or condos, but decided to keep the building as is. They're actually hoping to sell the building so it can once again be a place of worship.

For now, the building and Cole Photography are blocked off as a safety precaution.

People with Cardinal Construction inspected the building Friday night. They said if the wall made it through the night with collapsing more, there's a good chance it could be rebuilt, which is what the owners are hoping for.

"We were just praying it would stand through the night. It's a beautiful building. I love the building. I'd like to fix it," said O'Malley.

The O'Malleys have insurance on the building, but aren't sure yet what will be covered or what it will cost to repair the damage.

At this point, they don't even know the full extent of the damage.

"First we have to get the wall stable, then we'll be able to go inside. We're not able to go inside yet," said O'Malley.

O'Malley hopes a stained glass dome in the attic survives the wall collapse.
