Panthers Beat Bradley 5-0 to Begin Final Homestand

University of Northern Iowa senior pitcher Nick Kirk struck out 10 and gave up just four hits in a 5-0 complete-game shutout over Bradley Thursday night at Riverfront Stadium.

It was the third complete-game shutout in his career, and his second complete-game effort this season. Bradley was unable to move a man to third, and only four Braves reached second base in the contest.

Levi Ferguson was 3-of-5 from the plate with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Cory Ege was 2-of-3 with two RBIs, and Travis Bennett was 2-of-4 with a run scored.

Bennett led off the bottom of the sixth with a single through the left side. Jason Summers drew a walk, and Kalvin Johnson hit a drive into the gap in left center to score Bennett and break the scoreless tie. Cory Ege followed with a single up the middle that plated both Summers and Johnson, giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead.

UNI loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Bradley was able to turn the double play to end the frame.

Ege drew a full-count walk with one out in the bottom of the eighth.

Gabe Schultz put down a bunt single, and Grant Grgurich was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Levi Ferguson doubled into right center, scoring Ege and Schultz. Grgurich was thrown out as he tried to score, but UNI took a 5-0 lead on the play.

Colby Luttrell connected on a bloop single into left with two out in the top of the ninth, giving Bradley its first hit since the fourth inning.

Brad Kimball drew a walk to put runners on first and second, but Kirk struck out Jim Clayton to end the game.

The Panthers outhit Bradley 10-4 in the contest. UNI left nine on base, compared to seven for the Braves.

UNI and Bradley will play the second game in the three-game set on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
