Fewer Iowa college students pursue teaching

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Fewer Iowa college students are pursuing teaching as a career.

Iowa's colleges and universities are turning out fewer teachers.

State education officials say the trend threatens to add to teacher shortages in some subjects, such as math, science and special education.

The director of the Iowa Department of Education, Judy Jeffrey, says people view teaching as not being as rewarding as it once was and she says that is troubling.

At the center of the trend is a drop-off in new elementary school teachers.

A state education report show that candidates for elementary education teaching endorsements have dropped by nearly 30 percent since the 2003-2004 school year.

Officials say the decline also increases competition for top talent.

Tonight at 10, hear what local schools have to say. We'll also compare teacher salaries with other Iowa professions.
