3 bridges closed in Winnebago County

WINNEBAGO (AP)--Inspectors have ordered three rural bridges in Winnebago County closed and 19 more to be posted with lower weight limits because of structural problems.

County Engineer Jim Witt says the bridges being closed are near Thompson, west of Forest City and on the western edge of the county.

Witt told the Board of Supervisors about the bridges last week. He says from above, the bridges look fine. But, he says, there are major problems with pilings and other structures from underneath.

Witt says replacing a bridge can cost up to $500,000, while repairs can cost $50,000.

He says the county has just one bridge improvement project in the budget, and he expects the list of problem bridges to grow.
