Hobbs gets degree

AMES, Iowa - In the final moments of his Iowa State football career, Ellis Hobbs III picked off a pass that iced the Cyclones' 2004 Independence Bowl win over Miami of Ohio.  Since then he has played in and won an NFL Super Bowl with the New England Patriots.  Hobbs told reporters that neither thrill exceeded the honor of receiving his bachelor's degree in art and design Saturday in graduation ceremonies at Hilton Coliseum.

"This goes right there on that level," Hobbs said. "I was taught by my parents that if you start something you should finish it. I know how much this means to my parents, that is why they are here today."

Hobbs' mother was thrilled to witness the event in person.  She is not surprised that her son has crossed the finish line of his academic career.

"Ellis is a good young man," Nettie Hobbs said. "He has always been responsible and I knew he would finish his degree."

Hobbs flew in for the ceremony in the midst of transition after the cornerback was traded from New England to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Hobbs' family gave a short but spirited cheer from the upper reaches of Hilton Coliseum when his name was announced and he shook hands with ISU President Gregory Geoffroy.

Hobbs gave his supporters a wave and held up proof of his degree for all to see. The audience included his fellow graduates and a flock of media that were there to record the event .  Ultimately no words were needed from the native of Desoto, Texas. His smile said it all.
