Cyclone Softball advances

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Amanda Bradberry hit a two-run sixth inning homer and Rachel Zabriskie tossed a complete-game shutout to lift Iowa State to a 2-0 win over Kansas Friday evening in the opening round of the Big 12 Championships.

With the win, the eighth-seeded Cyclones (26-28) advance to the second round of the tournament to face top-seeded Oklahoma Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Bradberry's two-run shot off of Kansas' pitcher Val George broke up a scoreless tie in the sixth inning. George (10-16) had held the Cyclones to just one hit, a Bradberry double in the first, over the first five innings.

Zabriskie (18-23) kept the Jayhawks off the board, tossing her fifth shutout of the season despite allowing eight hits. The sophomore from Austin, Texas stranded 11 KU runners on base throughout the game, including runners at second and third in the final inning.

Kansas (21-31) had a bases loaded opportunity in the fourth inning with just one out but Zabriskie got Sara Ramirez to ground into a fielder's choice, forcing Kelsey Alsdorf out at home for the second out. The next batter, Kolby Fesmire, flew out to right field to end the threat.

The Jayhawks nearly scored in the second inning but a perfect relay by the Cyclones thwarted that attempt. Stevie Crisosto doubled to right center but Liz Kocon was cut down trying to score as centerfielder Kelsey Kidwell hit Bradberry who relayed it home to Alex Johnson for the final out of the inning.

Bradberry led the Cyclones, going 2-for-3 with the homer being her third of the season. The sixth-inning homer scored Carleigh Berry, who had singled to George in the previous at bat. Kelsey Kidwell collected ISU's only other hit of the game, roping a one-out sixth-inning single before getting thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.

Val Chapple and Allie Clark each had two hits for the Jayhawks.

The Cyclones have now won three-straight games and advance to the second round of the Big 12 Championships for the second season in a row.
