Vortex 2 study starts Sunday

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- An $11.9 million tornado experiment is set to begin Sunday.  It's been touted as the largest attempt to study tornadoes, ever.

It's called the "Verification of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment 2" -- or "Vortex 2".  It will start Sunday and run through June 13th.

Through the project, researchers hope to sample super cell thunderstorms to learn more about how tornadoes form and the damage they can cause.  They say the goal is to be able to issue tornado warnings earlier.

More than 120 scientists will follow storms in parts of Iowa, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas and Texas.
