New jobs, old buildings

Dubuque (KWWL) - Governor Chet Culver wants to create new jobs, by not forgetting about old buildings.

Governor Culver traveled to Dubuque to talk about the benefits of the Ijobs program. He also signed a bill to expand the state's historic tax credit program.

It will provide $50 million for restoration efforts across the state. The Governor signed the legislation at the historic roshek building, which will be renovated for IBMs new Technology Center. City officials say Dubuque can build jobs and transform its historic buildings.

"It will create jobs, green jobs, for Iowans across the state. As we have learned, historic preservation creates more jobs than new construction. The later being material intensive and the former being labor intensive," said Mayor Roy Buoh.

The Roshek building was once one of the largest department stores in the state.
