Linn County axes lobbying firm

CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) -- Linn County is cutting loose a lobbying firm it brought in last year to help negotiate federal dollars for flood recovery.

The county had footed almost half the bill -- about $9,000 per month since August -- for two lobbyists from Chicago-based Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal. The city of Cedar Rapids contracted to pay the firm about $10,000 a month.

The county Board of Supervisors voted to end the county's contribution last week.

Supervisor Brent Oleson says the county's main lobbyist has left the firm and wasn't replaced. Supervisor Jim Houser says he's not sure the county needs the law firm anymore.

A Cedar Rapids spokeswoman says the city will continue with its contract until it ends June 30.
