Parent training classes begin in Waterloo

WATERLOO (KWWL) A series of parent meetings, particularly for parents or grandparents of black children, kicked off Saturday in Waterloo at the MLK Center on Beech Street.

Paulette Wiley with ASK Resource Center in Des Moines is teaching the class once a month. The class will emphasis black children in schools.

Wiley said black students, particularly males, are over represented in special education, suspensions and expulsions and the general drop out rate. She said it's up to parents to "get connected" with the schools and their children.

"When parents have a voice and they're confident and there is communication and advocacy skills, there's a lot that can change with our children," said Paulette Wiley with ASK Resource Center.

Classes are funded through the Department of Education in Des Moines.

The parenting classes culminate in August with a Parent Empowerment Congress in Waterloo.

If you'd like to sign up for the parent training, call 515-243-1713.
