Hanson and Weber of Dike-New Hartford: Athletes of the Week

Posted:

The Drake Relays was a coming out party for two Dike-New Hartford athletes.

Sid Hansen and David Weber have the two top long-jumps in the state. Our Sid Jacob tells us these teammates are more friendly rivals than best friends...

David Weber unexpectedly had the lead with one long jumper to go...Teammate Sid Hansen...

Weber said "I didn't think I was in the lead yet and then he pushed me and told me, holy cow! That's when I finally realized I was in the lead."

Hansen said "When David beat my jump, I just, when he came up and told me about it, I just shoved him in a playful way and said no way man."

That's probably when I was the most nervous and then I was thinking, holy cow I could win this but...

Just like a year ago at Drake Stadium--the best was saved for last...Except this time Sid came out on top...

Barry Cuvelier, Dike-New Hartford head coach says "With the last jump last year, Sid was in first going into the last jump and the last jumper turned around and beat Sid.

They give you a minute inbetween each run and when he took most of his minute I knew something was going to happen.

Last year's loss did stick and I just took what I learned from last year and brought it into this year.

On the track Sid and David bring out the best in each other but off the track, they admit they're not best friends.

We don't really hang out much but we're friends, we talk and stuff.

I wouldn't say super-best friends but when we're on the track and up by the long jump pit, we're pretty close then.

Regardless of what happens at state---Sid and David are both winners...They say the 1-2 finish at the Drake Relays has already made their friendship stronger....
