#1 Flu Protection

Waterloo (KWWL) - The potential for a flu pandemic is sending a lot of people into a panic, even though there's not much we, the public, can do about it now.

Experts say the best way to protect ourselves is to re-visit a lesson we learned way back in pre-school, Hand washing 101.

You're not going to get rid of all of the dirt and germs and potential flu virus particles just by rinsing your hands.

    1. According to the Centers for Disease Control, you need to use warm water and soap, and scrub your hands vigorously.
    2. Don't forget the backs of your hands and under your fingernails. Germs also like to hide underneath rings.
    3. The general rule is to keep scrubbing for 20 seconds, about the length of time it takes to sing the ABC's or "Happy Birthday" twice.
    4. After you're done soaping up, rinse with warm water and dry your hands off with a paper towel. Use that paper towel to turn off the faucet.
