Pay Equity Day

Waterloo (KWWL) - April 28th is considered Pay Equity Day. This is the day in the year it takes a woman to make as much as a man did last year.

To bring attention to equal pay for equal work, women lined Franklin Street in Waterloo with signs asking drivers to honk in support of equal pay between men and women. The women protested the pay disparity for one hour... Symbolizing how in just one hour... Men make roughly 25 percent more than women.

"Women are making 78-percent of what men are, and in the higher paid jobs even though their wage can be the same, men still get 30-percent more in extra value of benefits," said Karen Atwood, protester.

These protestors say if women made as much money as men, the need for welfare would decrease by about 40-percent.
