Suspect dead in Police shooting incident

A 38-year old man is dead, after being shot by a Mt. Pleasant Police officer during a fight with the officer. The suspect, Michael J. Harris, was allegedly choking Officer Richard Martin during a fight in the emergency area of the Henry County Health Center early Monday morning.

The original call came into Mt. Pleasant Police at 3:14 Monday morning of a man with suicidal thoughts at the Starlight Motel.  Police responded, and Mr. Harris was transported to the hospital for an evaluation. Mr. Harris became uncooperative and tried to leave before the evaluation was complete.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety says Officer Martin used a taser on Mr. Harris, but Harris allegedly engaged in a physical fight with Martin and began choking the officer. That's when Officer Martin fired his weapon, killing Mr. Harris.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has been brought in to conduct the investigation.
