Cedar Rapids Burger King explodes

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Fire crews were called to the Burger King at 3030 Mount Vernon Road Southeast around 5:30 a.m. Friday.

Firefighters were just outside of the building to check on a fire when an explosion happened inside the restaurant, shattering dining room windows and blowing the front guest entrance off its hinges.

One firefighter was knocked backwards by the explosion, but was uninjured.

Firefighters got into the structure and found the interior filled with smoke, but initially no visible flame.  Portions of the ceiling and light fixtures had collapsed in the northeast corner of the building, where the restrooms, office and storage area were located.  Firefighters removed the remaining part of the ceiling to check for extension and found a small amount of fire in the attic area that was extinguished.  Fire crews also removed part of the exterior wall to check for fire spread.

Three employees made it out of the building uninujured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
