Less than one percent of Iowans have flood insurance

WATERLOO (KWWL) - According to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), less than 1% of Iowa residents have flood insurance. More than 40,000 Iowans were directly affected by the floods of 2008, but fewer than 14,000 households had flood insurance policies.

In Black Hawk County, the percentage of people with flood insurance is even more staggering. According to National Flood Insurance Program statistics as of Jan. 31, 2009, about 1.9 % of Black Hawk County households, or about 1070 of over 57,000, have flood insurance policies.

These statistics worry local officials.

Barbara Berquam of the Black Hawk County Emergency Management Agency said, "Since standard homeowners insurance doesn't cover flooding, it's important to have protection from the floods.  With over 4000 clients registering for FEMA disaster assistant in Black Hawk County, the NFIP statistics reveal that only a portion of those impacted by flooding had flood insurance." The NFIP offers flood insurance to homeowners, renters, and business owners.
