UI officials want to relocate Hancher

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- University of Iowa officials want to rebuild Hancher Auditorium and Art Building East complex in another location.

Both buildings were heavily damaged in the June floods and the university says mitigation issues at the current location and the likelihood of future floods make relocation the best option.

Both buildings exceed FEMA's 50% rule, which includes calculating the ratio of the recovery cost to the overall value of the building. That means FEMA can provide 90% of the funding to either rebuild or replace the facility.

In a recommendation to the Board of Regents, UI also lists a need for additional space as an additional reason to relocate. The document does not include a specific location. But, open spaces on campus on higher ground have been discussed.
