Liquor restrictions may loosen at convenience stores

DES MOINES (KWWL) - Gas stations across Iowa would be able to sell hard liquor in their main aisles near their other goods, under a controversial proposal speeding through the statehouse, according to the Des Moines Register.

Gas stations have built separate rooms with separate doors and separate cash registers to get around the current law.

Supporters say the change will reduce the burden and expense for business owners and make liquor more available to rural Iowans whose nearest grocery is a convenience store.

Opponents say the idea it could result in more teenage drinking and would worsen the quality of life in neighborhoods.

The proposal was introduced late in the session as an amendment to a budget bill, and passed in the senate this week.

It could come up for a vote in the Iowa house as early as Thursday.
