Poor economy blamed for no My Waterloo Days fireworks

WATERLOO (KWWL) - The My Waterloo Days Executive Committee announced there will be no fireworks for this year's My Waterloo Day's, "Party on the Plaza".  Committee members were unable to find a sponsor.

Rob Camarata, My Waterloo Days Chair said, "This was a tough decision to make especially in light of the record fireworks display we were treated to last year by Hawkeye Alarm celebrating their 50th Anniversary" (reported to be in excess of $25,000) .

The economy has resulted in businesses being reserved as well as reluctant to sponsor this short and expensive event at the 2009 My Waterloo Days.  "Many people are unaware of the $12,000 to $15,000 price tag for a just a moderate fireworks display", states My Waterloo Days Director, Jay Stoddard. He did state that overall, this year's sponsorships have been "holding their own.... We can always use more sponsors though!  Putting on a FREE event is very challenging."

No fireworks will obviously be a big disappointment to many, but organizers say there will be plenty of other exciting new things to see and do. For instance, for the second year in a row there will be local High School Show Choirs performing Thursday from 11am to 3pm in Lincoln Park. NEW this year, is a full Carnival and Midway as well as the huge Family Activity area inside the new Expo.  Brand new high peak tents and a new professional stage will help make this year's My Waterloo Days a first class event.  We hope you'll be able to join us on May 28-31 for My Waterloo Days 2009!
