Hawk Rally Spoils UNI Softball Upset Bid, 5-3

The underdog Panther softball team jumped out to an early 3-1 lead over the 23rd ranked Iowa Hawkeyes in the Panthers final home game of the regular season. But a four-run fifth inning which included a 3-run homer from freshman Liz Watkins lifted the Hawkeyes past the Panthers, 5-3. The Hawkeyes have now five straight games against the Panthers and improve to 36-11 on the season, while the Panthers fall to 30-17.

Hawkeye senior Brittney Weil (20-7) pitched the final four innings of play to earn the win. Weil struck out six batters, allowed one hit and walked one. UNI junior Jen Larsen (17-9) took the loss after allowing nine hits and five runs in five complete innings. UNI freshman Jaye Hutcheson came in to pitch the final two innings and retired six straight batters in her relief effort. Hutcheson struck out three of the six batters she faced.
