Taking back the night

Cedar Falls (KWWL) - According to national statistics, one in four women and one in six men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.

The Cedar Valley got together to support assault victims and make the streets safe at night. "Take Back the Night" is a nationwide event protesting sexual assault and violence against women. Tuesday night the UNI community marched to a vigil on campus.

Participants reflected on women's safety and sexual assaults by sharing their own experiences.

"To take back the night, and take back the ability to walk out the streets without fear of violence or physical assault and it's become an encompassing event including all people of all genders," said UNI student, Kaitlin Korbitz

There will be a "Take Back the Night Rally" in Iowa City Thursday. It begins at 8 p.m. on the UI Pentacrest.
