Dyersville Field of Dreams celebrate 20 years

DYERSVILLE (KWWL) -- It's hard to believe that on this day in 1989, the film ''Field of Dreams'' was released in theaters. That movie put Iowa and the small town of Dyersville on the map, now 20 years later, it's doing it again.

All you have to do is say the famous line "if you build it they will come." Which goes beyond the movie when it comes to progress in Dyersville. 20 years later, the city has seen tourism grow significantly.

They've added two hotels and seen a rise in visitors to other attractions like the Basilica. But why aren't we seeing a big celebration? Economic struggles have struck-out the idea. The field's owners say it makes no sense to spend money on a celebration.

But the Dyersville chamber tells us, instead, $5,000 to the local food bank. Even with no definite celebration, the chamber is embracing today.

"It's amazing that the field of dreams movie site is still here 20 years later and not only that it put Dyersville on the map but it also built our community," said Karla Thompson, Executive Director.

Another group that helped build the Dyersville community, perhaps even promote it, the Field of Dreams Ghost Players.

Tuesday at 10:00 we'll hear from some of the players about the impact they've had on Iowa tourism.

Tuesday is also voting day for the Dyersville Chamber of Commerce "Imagine 2020" campaign. Residents can vote on their top 5 ideas to help Dyersville grow.
