Axle failure may have caused Iowa train derailment

MOSCOW (KWWL) - Officials with the Iowa Interstate Railroad say an axle failure may have caused a derailment near Moscow in eastern Iowa last weekend.

Twenty-six cars went off the tracks about 12:45 p.m. on Sunday. No one was injured.

Railroad spokesman Mick Burkart says 13 of the cars were empty, while the rest were carrying soybeans. He says a total of about 650 tons of soybeans spilled in the accident.

The tracks were expected to open late Monday afternoon.

A telephone call to the railroad on Tuesday was not immediately returned.
