ISU to look at changes in festival to curb arrests

More changes could be coming to Iowa State University's annual spring celebration in the wake of fights and arrests that marred the festivities last weekend.

Tom Hill, vice president of student affairs, says officials will discuss keeping people who are not part of the ISU community from future Veishea celebrations.

Ames and campus police reported 88 arrests. According to university records, 24 were Iowa State students.

Hill says administrators are looking at changes, including limiting Veishea-related activities to students, family members, ISU alumni and Ames residents.

Veishea, a spring fixture on campus since 1922, has had trouble with violence in the past. It was canceled in 2005 after a riot in 2004.
