Des Moines businessman Hubbell dies

DES MOINES (AP) -- Des Moines businessman James Hubbell Jr., the former chairman of Equitable Insurance Co., has died. He was 86.

His son, James Hubbell III, says his father died on Saturday of natural causes.

Hubbell joined the family insurance company in 1946 after graduating from Harvard University and serving in World War II as a Navy pilot.

He retired as chairman of Equitable in 1993.

Hubbell also was credited with helping revitalize downtown Des Moines.

He is survived by his wife, four children, a brother and 10 grandchildren.

Hubbell's family owned Terrace Hill from 1884 to 1973, when it was given to the state to serve as the governor's mansion.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Des Moines.
