Iowa House OKs health expansion

DES MOINES (AP) -- The Iowa House has overwhelmingly approved a measure expanding health coverage to more children.

By a 91-3 vote Monday, the House approved the measure, the final in a three-step health care expansion. The proposal returns to the Senate, where a different version was approved.

The measure would ensure state-backed health insurance to children of families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level. That would mean most of the 53,000 Iowa children lacking health care would get coverage.

A separate measure includes the money for the final step in the health care expansion, estimated at roughly $8 million. That's lower than previously expected thanks to an infusion of federal dollars.
