Gene points to risk for breast cancer

Posted:
(NBC) -- A new study is helping researchers understand the risk factors that lead to the development of breast cancer.
In the largest study of its kind, researchers looked at the mutations of a gene (called P-53) in patients with breast cancer.
Nearly 26 percent of the women studied had mutations in the P-53 gene, and had a much higher risk of dying from breast cancer.
Researchers say if they can find genetic or environmental risk factors that lead to the damage of the P-53 gene. They may be able to help prevent breast cancer.
