Iowa City city manager fired: questions raised

IOWA CITY (AP) -- Iowa City officials acknowledge that the firing of their city manager less than a month before a critical sales tax vote raises questions.

The Iowa City city council on Friday fired former city manager Michael Lombardo. Lombardo would have overseen money spent from the 1 percent sales tax, should it pass a vote.

Iowa City mayor Regenia Bailey says citizens will likely be left wondering after the decision, but says Lombardo's role could be dispersed among other department heads should the tax be approved.

Bailey has refused to discuss why Lombardo was fired nine months after he took the job. He received nearly $240,000 in salary and severance pay.
