Northern Iowa library use increases

MASON CITY (AP) -- Northern Iowa librarians credit the tanking economy for rising library use.

Mason City Public Library director Mary Markwalter says library use was up 6 percent in the second half of 2008. Librarians in Clear Lake and Garner also say they're seeing more people.

Those reports are consistent with an Iowa Library Association study that found library use was up almost 7 percent in the second half of last year.

And it's not just books, librarians say, but DVD rentals and internet use. As a way to cut bills, they say, patrons are turning to the library instead of paying for internet service.

Given the state of the job market, Garner Public Library director Ellen Petty says she's making many copies of resumes.
