Hawkeyes end spring with scrimmage

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- With top running back Jewel Hampton nursing a sore hamstring on the sidelines, the Hawkeyes spent much of their spring scrimmage working on pass protection.

Hampton, a sophomore, is the leading contender to replace All-American Shonn Greene in the backfield. Without him, Iowa spent much of Saturday's scrimmage working on blitz pickup in the passing game.

At times it appeared ragged, with the defensive line putting consistent pressure on the quarterbacks. Other times, incumbent quarterback Ricky Stanzi showed he has improved since guiding the Hawkeys to a 31-10 win over South Carolina in the Outback Bowl, capping an improbable 9-4 season.

Stanzi struggled with turnovers last season but has protected the ball better this spring and teammates and coaches say he has embraced a leadership role.
