Support keeps growing for injured police officer

MARION (KWWL) - "It's a little bit more important this year for us as police officers," said Cedar Rapids police officer Glenn Kieler.

Just three weeks ago the Cedar Rapids Police Department nearly lost one of its own.   That's why the third annual run benefitting families of crime victims carries with it so much meaning.

"You see a lot of the arm bracelets that they're wearing to support Tim Davis and it's great to see communities, not just Cedar Rapids, but Marion, Hiawatha, Mount Vernon, Lisbon, a lot of these other agenices kind of come together and show their support for a fallen officer," said Marion police officer Tom Daubs.

From Thomas Park to Grace Baptist Church in Marion, support for Tim Davis continues to pour in.

"It feels really good to know that the community is behind the law enforcement community because they don't always get to hear how much we support 'em," said Cedar Rapids police chaplain Bill Graham, organizer of Saturday morning's pancake breakfast to benefit the Davis family.

Several dozen members of a local biking club switched gears to be a part of the breakfast.

"The ride was scheduled to go to Swisher, but when we heard the breakfast was here at Grace Baptist Church, we decided to change the route and come out here," said bicyclist Dorie Kelchen.

Officer Rob Kasper has worked for the Cedar Rapids Police Department for a decade. He says he's never seen so many people rally around an injured officer.

"Sometimes even the people that we arrest, after that's taken care of are asking about how Officer Davis is," said Kasper.

Davis' recovery is far from reaching the finish line. But if Saturday is any indication, public support is keeping right in stride.

"We can't stop those prayers and can't stop that support," said Kieler. "We need to keep it going right now."
