Health Plus: Cancer Rehab

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- More than a year after treatment for breast cancer, Rachel Scott was still in pain.  But the 42-year-old says a referral to Covenant's cancer rehabilitation program in Waterloo restored her quality of life.

"Within a week, my pain level was down," said Scott.  "My range of motion was increasing and, after six weeks, I have zero pain."

Her daughter, Emma, says she got her mom back.

"Within a week she was happier and brighter and had more energy," said Emma Scott.  "She was my mom again after therapy."

Occupational therapist Angela Mchone says the program is the only one of its kind in the area.

"We can affect people's lives no matter how simple it is -- from reaching for a pencil to brushing your teeth to taking care of a child, we can help you do those things easily without pain," said Mchone.

Rachel still works out three to five times a week.  She has a message for other cancer survivors lacking energy.

"If you had a pre-picture of what my life was like and where it is now, I can't imagine that anyone would not want to make that journey," said Scott.

A journey that brought mom and daughter even closer.

Covenant's cancer rehab and wellness program is located inside the cancer treatment center in Waterloo.
