It's spring cleaning time

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- It's that time of year again -- time for spring cleaning.

Whether you love it or dread it, there are some things you need to know as you get rid of all the extra stuff you've colected over the winter.

Dawn Cooper took advantage of the warm weather by cleaning out her garage.

"I love days like this where i can get out and finally do some cleaning," said Cooper.

"As people are getting into their garages for the first time in awhile other than pulling out the snowblowers, people are definitely starting to think about getting the stuff out," said Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jordan.

Jordan says the spring season is one of the busier times of the year at the landfill, and it's a good time to remind people the proper way to dispose of some of their junk.

Yard waste, tires, and appliances are all required to be recycled.  Jordan recommends corosive or toxic wastes like household clearners and paints should also be recycled.  That can be done by making an appointment to drop them off at the landfill for no charge.

"We tend to make a lot of hazardous waste appointments this year as people come across things that have frozen in the garage or they realize something they had last year that didn't work this year," said Jordan.

After all, a clean garage done properly means a cleaner environment.
