Iowa students run countries

Cedar Falls (KWWL) - Reading about world relations, and debating them are two separate things.

That's why Iowa high schools took part in a mock United Nations Conference Thursday. More than 500 students met on the UNI campus to replicate a U.N. Conference in New York City.

The goal of the conference is for students representing a country, to work toward a goal using diplomacy.

"Many are interested in law or politics or international affairs or public service," said Bethany Schwichtenberg, Model U.N. Conference.

"It's a pretty good experience. I learned a lot from just passing ammendments and getting up and speaking in front of people," said Colin Ashwood, High School Junior.

Conference topics included human rights, multi-lingualism, disaster relief, and counter-terrorism.
