Iowa House OKs absentee ballot bill

DES MOINES (KWWL) - Local election officials could begin counting absentee ballots the day before the election under a bill approved by the House and sent to Gov. Chet Culver.

The measure approved Thursday addresses an issue that has emerged recently as political parties, especially the Democrats, have encouraged absentee voting.

State law requires that absentee ballots be postmarked by Election Day, but it has taken days for some counties to complete counting.

An initial proposal required officials to count absentee ballots the day before the election, but that was changed to give them the option of early counting.

Counties that don't count absentee ballots by 10 p.m. on Election Day would be forced to count early in the next election.
