Cyclones Sign Ju-Co Recruit

Iowa State head men's basketball coach Greg McDermott announced today that LaRon Dendy, a 6-9 forward from Indian Hills Community College, who was ranked in the top-75 nationally in the Class of 2007, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Iowa State beginning in the 2009-10 season.

Dendy, who will be a junior next season, just finished his second year at Indian Hills C.C., helping the Warriors achieve a No. 2 national ranking in the final junior college poll. He averaged 8.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and shot 63.3 percent from the field (31-49 FG) in nine games in 2008-09, seeing limited action after suffering a stress fracture. He earned All-Region XI honors as a freshman after averaging 8.5 points and 6.3 rebounds. JucoJunction ranked him No. 57 nationally in the preseason junior college rankings.

"We are very pleased to have LaRon join our program," McDermott said. "He is a versatile forward that will contribute on both offense and defense. LaRon has the ability to score in different ways by using his athleticism and quickness to go along with a great work ethic. We are excited about his experience and the defensive presence he will bring to our frontline."

Dendy was rated as one of the best prep players in the Class of 2007, ranking No. 63 in the final Rivals.com 2007 rankings. He originally committed to Clemson before deciding to attend IHCC. The Warriors were 58-13 in his two years with the squad.

"I really liked the coaching staff and the style of play at Iowa State," Dendy said. "I really bonded with the guys on the team and I know they have a couple of great recruits coming in next year."

Dendy joins Marquis Gilstrap, a 6-6 wing from Gulf Coast Community College, and Chris Colvin, a 6-2 point guard from Chicago, Ill., as Cyclones who have signed letters of intent for the 2009-10 season. Gilstrap is considered one of the best players in junior college and Colvin is rated as the 77th-best player in the nation in the final ESPNU rankings. Alex Dorr, a freshman from Norwalk, Iowa, will also join the Cyclones as a preferred walk-on.
