Culver seeks Gessow confirmation at DHS

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Gov. Chet Culver is stepping up pressure on lawmakers to confirm Gene Gessow as director of the Iowa Department of Human Services.

Culver called on the Senate Tuesday to approve his appointment of Gessow.

Gessow has been serving as director of the state's largest agency but his confirmation is in trouble in the Senate.

The deadline for acting on the appointment is Wednesday.

The appointments must be confirmed by a two-thirds vote.

While Democrats control the Senate by a 32-18 margin, they are short of the 34 votes needed for confirmation.

Culver says he met with Senate Minority Leader Paul McKinley, R-Chariton, last week and was told that not one Republican senator will vote for Gessow.
