Mason City mulls $1.5 million in school cuts

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) -- The Mason City school board is set to consider $1.5 million in budget cuts for the 2009-10 school year and the elimination of 37 jobs.

A public hearing on the budget will be held Monday.

Cuts recommended by district administrators could include 14 teachers, 14 paraprofessionals and eight part- and full-time custodians.

There could also be a reduction of as many as 13 coaching positions, a delay in textbook acquisitions and the cancellation of the high school's musical.

Superintendent of Schools Anita Micich says a combination of enrollment declines and increased costs have created the need to reduce expenses
