Kids Fishing Derby: catching fish while learning

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Young anglers were out in force in the Cedar Valley Saturday.

More than 100 people gathered throughout the day at North Prairie Lake in Cedar Falls for the Cedar Valley Walleye Club's Kids Fishing Derby.

The Department of Natural Resources stocked the lake with trout around 10:00 a.m. Saturday.  Kids won prizes for catching fish, which were donated by area businesses, and the walleye club.

"It's about the kids to get them off the couch, so they're not sitting watching TV, playing video games.  Get 'em out to enjoy the outdoor area and to learn how to fish and respect the outdoors," said Cedar Valley Walleye Club President Walter Ertz.

The Cedar Valley Walleye Club is planning another free fishing day June 6 at George Wyth Lake.
