DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Illinois prep point guard Cully Payne says he'll play for Iowa next season.
Payne, a 6-foot-1 senior from Schaumburg, Ill., averaged 22 points last season. His year was cut short after 16 games because of stress fractures in his back, but Payne says he's already been cleared to play.
Payne committed to DePaul in eighth grade, then changed his mind and signed with Alabama. The Crimson Tide released Payne from his letter of intent this winter after they fired coach Mark Gottfried.
Payne will likely get the chance to play right away. Guards Jeff Peterson and Jake Kelly announce their plans to transfer last month.
