Area Easter spending strong

DUBUQUE (KWWL) - Can the recession seep into something as sacred as Easter?

A survey from the National Retail Federation says consumers will spend about 21 dollars less this year on easter merchandise and food.

The survey also showed 64% of shoppers intend to buy their Easter items at discount stores.
That's up 5% from last year.

Also on the rise, the percentage of people planning to have Sunday's holiday meal at home rather than going out.

Managers at Hartig Drug in Dubuque say despite national trends they've already seen a number of last minute shoppers.

Store manager Vicky Althoff said, "I think people just need a little spring and it doesn't matter the economy, if we offer discounts they're going to come in and shop... holiday just as normal."
