Protesters swarm House chamber over gay marriage debate

DES MOINES (KWWL) - The gay marriage debate is once again at center stage in the Iowa state capitol.  Some legislators are trying to force a debate, while hundreds on both sides of the issue swarm the statehouse to get their voices heard.

Our affiliate WHO-TV in Des Moines is reporting republican lawmakers called for a vote in the house that would essentially ban gay marriage, but House Speaker Pat Murphy told republicans the issue had not been brought up properly.

Nearly 300 people took their rallies outside inside the house chamber as legislators tried to begin the process.

When effort failed, some demonstrators who packed the house chambers chanted "Let us vote!"

In order for any resolution to make it to the floor for a vote, republicans need the support of eight democrats in both chambers.

An amendment is the only way to overturn the supreme court ruling that a ban on gay marriage violates Iowa's constitution.
